A determined College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers squad scored their first win after demolishing the Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates, in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 26-24, this afternoon before an animated crowd at the Filoil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Blazers put on an impressive display of balanced offense and steady playmaking as they averted a third consecutive loss while sending their foes to oblivion with a 0-3 card.

Veterans Giza Yumang and Kathy Kwan, a former member of the national training pool, scored 12 points apiece to spearhead the Taft-based netters.

Meanwhile, Joy Gazelle Cases poured in a game-high 15 markers for the Lady Pirates, who also drew four blocks and four aces from their skipper.

The Lady Blazers, inspired and unfazed to capture their maiden win, sizzled early on as they unleashed a 14-6 run to finish the first set at 25-19.

Lyceum, however, bounced back mightily as they relied on the tandem of Jamie Peña and Nasella Guliman, who combined for 23 points, to post an 18-14 advantage in the second set before St. Benilde retaliated and snatched the set, 25-23.

Kwan then put on a stellar show in the third set, leading the Blazers to a 5-0 blast.

The Lady Pirates, who dropped their first two matches after dominating the WNCAA, capitalized on St. Benilde's miscues to trim the deficit, 13-14.

Both teams then traded furious attacks and tricky drop shots until the Blazers showed endgame composure to take the set - and the match - 26-24.
