Pierce powers Celtics past Cavs in season opener

Pierce powers Celtics past Cavs in season opener

CLEVELAND (AP)—Shaquille O’Neal(notes) has learned the ropes in his 17 NBA seasons. There’s one lesson that has endured since he was a raw rookie.

“You can’t win a championship in the first game,” he said.

Boston’s Big Three—plus Rasheed—spoiled Cleveland’s overhyped season opener on Tuesday night with a 95-89 win over the new-look Cavaliers, who may have LeBron James(notes) and Shaq but appear to be a long way from true title contenders.

Paul Pierce(notes) scored 23 points, Ray Allen(notes) 16 and Kevin Garnett(notes) 13 in his first regular-season game since last March as the Celtics, overlooked by some this preseason, ended an 11-game losing streak in Cleveland and snapped a 16-game skid by visiting teams in games between the Eastern powers who figure to meet again sometime in May or June.

“It was a good Day One,” Pierce said. “Psychologically, you want to go into a team’s building and win, especially in a place where we haven’t won in a few years. It’s great to come here and get a win. We know when we come here next time that we can do it again.”

Pierce made two crucial jumpers and two free throws in the final 1:03 to pace the Celtics, whose drive to a second straight title was derailed when Garnett injured his knee late last season. Rasheed Wallace(notes), added as a free agent during the offseason, had 12 points.

James scored 38 and O’Neal added 10 points—just two after halftime—and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who won their first 23 home games last season but are already 0-1 on their floor.

Cleveland’s offense never found a rhythm as the Cavs tried to figure out how to best use the 7-foot-1, 325-pound O’Neal.

“We’d like to start off 1-0, but there are 100 games left,” said O’Neal, who was just 1 of 5 from the floor in the second half and missed his only two free throws. “We’ll be fine. I’ve been on teams that started 0-1, 0-5, 5-0, 10-0. Nothing matters unless you win the whole thing.”

Because of the 14-time All-Star O’Neal’s addition, the Cavaliers have gotten the bulk of the preseason attention and are a trendy pick to win their first NBA title.

The Celtics may have other plans.

“We just carry on, handle our business and understand we have one goal in mind,” Pierce said. “We really don’t care what people say about us. We know what our goal is.”

Garnett looked fully recovered from surgery to repair his right knee. Allen stroked a couple 3s, and Pierce was his cold-blooded best down the stretch. After James missed a 3-pointer that would have brought Cleveland within one, Pierce stuck a 15-footer to make it 89-83.

Cleveland turned it over when newly acquired Anthony Parker(notes) couldn’t handle a pass from James, and Pierce made the Cavs pay again with a second dagger from the outside.

Pierce had 11 rebounds, Garnett 10 and Rajon Rondo(notes) added 10 assists for Boston, whose reserves outscored Cleveland’s 26-10.

“I liked what happened tonight because everyone contributed,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “It was as much of a team win as you can get.”

James was in MVP form, but this wasn’t the debut the Cavs envisioned. Their offense sputtered as coach Mike Brown feared, and their defense didn’t do a good job on the perimeter and was missing one of its key components, guardDelonte West(notes), who was inactive for the game and whose future seems uncertain in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers began their quest for a title without the troubled but valuable West, who has had a turbulent offseason dealing with medical and personal issues. General manager Danny Ferry and a support team helping the guard decided West was not ready to play.

West has bipolar disorder and blamed an arrest last month on weapons charges near his home in Maryland on not staying with his medications. As the Cavs were introduced before the game, West leaned against a wall in the tunnel leading to Cleveland’s locker room.

James finished with eight assists, made four 3-poiners and delivered two spectacular chase-down blocks.

Wearing a pair of headphones with blue Yankees pinstripes and NY logo, James, who can become a free agent after the season, stretched out before the game in the locker room listening to Young Jeezy’s “24, 23,” a song that includes lyrics about Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant(notes) and James.

“I used to play Kobe, but now I play LeBron,” James rapped loudly while eyeing a flat-screen TV.

He wasn’t singing afterward.

“Boston is a great team,” James said. “I think we can all say that we probably will see each other in the postseason. We will be around.”

The circus-like atmosphere outside the arena was more befitting an NBA finals game in June than an October opener. Cleveland fans have been waiting months for this night, the tip-off to a season already unlike any in the franchise’s 40-year history.

On the other side of Ontario Street, a billboard said, “It Begins.” What matters to the Cavs, though, is how it ends.

“They’re going to be great,” Rivers said of the Cavs. “Shaq’s a great player and LeBron, if he’s not the best, he’s 1A. I’ve heard a lot of talk about Shaq clogging up stuff, but you can’t leave Shaq so it’s going to actually open it up more for LeBron. They’re going to be a tough basketball team.”

James had a basket taken away when the officials reviewed a layup in the final minute. It was the first use of the NBA’s expanded instant-replay system, which allows officials to check to see if a shot has gotten off before the 24-second shot clock expires.

Notes: The Celtics were without Glen “Big Baby” Davis, who is out indefinitely after breaking his thumb in a fight with a friend. … O’Neal joked that he would miss injured Boston forward Glen Davis(notes).“They call him Big Baby for a reason,” cracked the Big Diesel. “Because he’s my son.” … The Cavs have shown interest in free agent G Antonio Daniels(notes), who had his contract bought by Minnesota during the preseason. Brown and Ferry worked with Daniels in San Antonio. “I like him as a person,” Brown said. “He’s a veteran guard with some size who has won a championship.” Daniels cleared waivers on Tuesday. … Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger sat courtside. He and James are friends, and Big Ben competed against O’Neal this summer on the Shaq Vs. TV series.

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws showed endgame composure to eke out a heart-stopping 16-25, 30-28, 17-25, 25-21, 15-10, come-from-behind victory over erstwhile unbeaten San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) Lady Stags for their fourth win in the Shakey’s V-League 2nd Conference yesterday.

Guest star Rachel Ann Daquis scored on a ferocious kill to atone for earlier final set miscues and put an end to the more than two-hour match before a wild and roaring crowd at the Filoil – Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Open spikers Cherry May Vivas and Shaira Gonzales put on a dominating display of speed, strength and stamina, nailing 23 and 14 points, respectively to help the Morayta-based volleybelles inch closer to the quarterfinals. Crowd favorite Daquis had 10 markers.

Meanwhile, Princess Elaine Cruz and reigning NCAA Most Valuable Player Analyn Joy Benito scored 20 and 19, in that order, for the Stags, who appeared to streak to their third straight win before choking in the end.

In a match that showed signs of things to come for two title contenders, both squads exhibited powerful attacks, rock-solid defenses and superb play.

After FEU raced to an 8-3 lead in the first set, coach Roger Gorayeb made the proper adjustments as SSC-R, who clinched the NCAA championship two weeks ago, dropped a 9-1 bomb and never looked back to take the set, 25-16.

The second canto was nothing short of spectacular as both teams fought down the wire, eliciting oohs and ahhs from the predominantly FEU crowd, as neither squad gained headway before the five-foot-11 Daquis struck hard to hand the Lady Tamaraws the set, 30-28.

UAAP runners-up FEU again took an early lead in the third set but the Lady Stags, behind Benito’s blinding spikes and wallops by Marrie Quigley, dominated to take a commanding 2-1 lead, 25-17.

With Benito and Cruz flexing their muscles and the San Sebastian defense seemingly insurmountable, everything looked to point to a win for the Lady Stags.

Ironically, that was their last hurrah.

The Lady Tamaraws capitalized on Vivas’ power plays while making sure the Recto-based netters’ attacks won’t enter their court as they won the set, 25-21.

The look on Gorayeb and the rest of the coaching staff’s faces said it all: the Lady Stags have been caught in a trap it could not get out of.

With guns blazing and adrenaline pumping, FEU blitzed through a listless SSC-R squad, 7-0, before fending off a late rally to take the match at 15-10.

Blazers sink Pirates for 1st V-League win

A determined College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers squad scored their first win after demolishing the Lyceum of the Philippines Lady Pirates, in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 26-24, this afternoon before an animated crowd at the Filoil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Blazers put on an impressive display of balanced offense and steady playmaking as they averted a third consecutive loss while sending their foes to oblivion with a 0-3 card.

Veterans Giza Yumang and Kathy Kwan, a former member of the national training pool, scored 12 points apiece to spearhead the Taft-based netters.

Meanwhile, Joy Gazelle Cases poured in a game-high 15 markers for the Lady Pirates, who also drew four blocks and four aces from their skipper.

The Lady Blazers, inspired and unfazed to capture their maiden win, sizzled early on as they unleashed a 14-6 run to finish the first set at 25-19.

Lyceum, however, bounced back mightily as they relied on the tandem of Jamie Peña and Nasella Guliman, who combined for 23 points, to post an 18-14 advantage in the second set before St. Benilde retaliated and snatched the set, 25-23.

Kwan then put on a stellar show in the third set, leading the Blazers to a 5-0 blast.

The Lady Pirates, who dropped their first two matches after dominating the WNCAA, capitalized on St. Benilde's miscues to trim the deficit, 13-14.

Both teams then traded furious attacks and tricky drop shots until the Blazers showed endgame composure to take the set - and the match - 26-24.

Arboleda suspended without pay for the rest of the year

Burger King point guard Wynne Arboleda has been suspended without pay for the rest of the 2009-10 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) season after his attack on a fan during a game Friday at the Araneta Coliseum, a report from Rick Olivares of Bleachers' Brew said.

PBA commissioner Renauld Barrios let the axe fall on Arboleda's head after a meeting with the latter at the league's office in Libis, Quezon City.

“As we pointed out to you, even granting that said fan was foul-mouthed and verbally abusive as confirmed by reports to us, there is a “line” that a PBA player cannot and should not cross: to physically harm a fan," said Barrios.

"Your serious breach of this “line” at this time and in the manner described herein endangers the PBA as being perceived by the public as unwholesome and not deserving of fan support.”

The year-long suspension was the heaviest fine the PBA has meted out in recent memory, with the league showing that it means business when it comes to dealing with assaults on fans, unarguably the lifeblood of Asia's first play-for-pay league.

The six-foot Arboleda, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, was thrown out of the game after being involved in a scuffle with Chris Tiu fan Alain Katigbak, who was seated courtside. The suspension will cost him no less than Php 2.73-million in salaries and a fine of Php 20, 000.00

Any repeat of the same or similar act will result in a lifetime ban from the league.
